House Approves Easley's Clean Smokestacks Bill

RALEIGH - The State House today passed Gov. Mike Easley's Clean Smokestacks bill, which would substantially cut the emissions from coal-fired power plants of multiple air pollutants that cause smog, haze and other pollution problems.

The bill will now go back to the Senate for concurrence. The following is a quote from Easley on today's vote.

"This plan will dramatically reduce air pollution in North Carolina and benefit the health of our people without emptying consumers' pockets," Easley said. "I hope that our action on the state level will serve as a model for other states and for Washington as we all look for ways to improve air quality in the Southeast and across the country."
