Electronic Authorizations Q & A - Stations

1.  What additional equipment will I need to purchase?

No additional equipment will be required for stations that are already equipped with an On-board Diagnostic (OBD II) analyzer. Safety-only stations will be provided with a piece of equipment that can perform inspections and send results electronically to the North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NC-DMV). Inspection stations, without equipment to electronically transfer inspections results by the start of the Electronic Authorizations Program, November 1, 2008, will be prohibited by NC-DMV from performing inspections. Stations will be required to have a dedicated phone line for safety-only analyzers.

2.  How do I get more information about this program change?

Prior to conducting town meetings in May 2008, NC-DMV will hand deliver letters to all stations informing inspectors of program changes as well where the town meetings will be held. Attendance will be mandatory for anyone who plans to continue to perform North Carolina vehicle inspections.

3.  Will there be inspector training?

Yes, NC-DMV will be responsible for providing training to all North Carolina inspector-mechanics prior to the start of the Electronic Authorizations Program.

4.  Will inspection stations still be able to perform out-of-state vehicle inspections?

Yes, all stations will still be able to perform inspections for vehicles not registered in North Carolina.

5.  How does this benefit the stations?

Stations will no longer have to travel to the tag agency offices and stand in line to obtain stickers. Also, stations will not have to worry about sticker security. Station owners can authorize staff to purchase electronic authorizations directly from the analyzer at any time. Station owners will no longer need to spend large sums of money to store books of stickers at the station; instead owners can purchase a book of electronic authorizations as needed without having to leave the station. Owners with multiple analyzers and/or stations will be able to assign books of electronic authorizations to different analyzers via the Internet.

6.  Who do I call if I have questions?

Contact your local NC-DMV office for more details.
