In the United States commuting to work accounts for about one-fifth of
personal miles traveled and between 1983 and 1995 commute trips grew 37
percent longer in miles ( 1 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey
1995) According to the 2001 Urban Mobility Report the average person
loses the equivalent of one week of work time due to urban traffic
delays. Over the last 20 years this figure has tripled and it continues
to increase.. What can you do about this problem you ask? Drive less!
With fewer cars on the road we can combat congestion and improve local
air quality. For every 1000 new carpools formed, over the course of a
year,20 tons of smog forming emissions would be reduced. (2) US EPA
